Just doing some research into famous people who grew up on council estates and stumbled upon the fact that Iron Maiden founder and principle songwriter, Steve Harris was born and raised in Leytonstone. A nice extra dimension to my original housing angle is that in addition for playing for the West Ham youth team he studied as an architectural draughtsman. Having said that, I haven't been able to establish whether he did in fact grow up on a council estate or not (if anyone knows I'd be very grateful - it was our invaluable friend Google who made the initial connection) making this lovely piece of local trivia potentially irrelevant to my overall project.

Puts me in mind of the lyric by Albertos Y Los Trios Paranoias "council estate/ filled with hate/ gonna leave it now/ before it's too late" from their Snuff Rock EP. I don't know if CP Lee either counts as famous or grew up on a council estate though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQotUNNbK5o
Iron Maiden modelled their stage-act on the effects of the Mighty Panjandrum - which, of course, was made in Leytonstone. Coicncidence?
Was Paul Weller's 'Stanley Road' gaff on a council estate... or just a council house?
Barrat Homes' former boss David Pretty was dragged up on a council estate in Acton.
Ricky Gervais "grew up in a three-bedroom house on a council estate in Reading"
I grew up on an estate... but it was a large country estate with staff, a large lake and excellent shooting...

Thanks for these great comments. The panjandrum is a great link back to Leytonstone - haven't worked out quite where it was made yet. And talk of Ricky Gervais reminds me that his near neighbour in Hampstead Jonathan Ross lived in very humble dwellings in Leytonstone but I'm not sure whether it was a council house or not.
Interesting that you should bring up the eugenicist Jonathan Ross in this thread - his remarks back in 2006 about putting "something in the water supply... in order to stop [people on council estates] having children" could just be a display of self-loathing. (For the record wasn't he born in Camden then decamped later to Leytonstone... I don't know if this dilutes his claim to be authentically Leytonstonian)
